Great Instruction

Great teaching is at the heart of any successful martial arts academy.  At Renzo Gracie Bayside, we provide the highest level of technical instruction coupled with the patience to convey that knowledge to each and every student.  Your progress is priority and our instructors go great length to make sure that you are progressing in the correct way.

Of course every student learns at a different pace, but mastery of the basics is a universal principle in the Renzo Gracie system.

Head Instructors

Professor Doug Pelinkovic, a life-long martial artist, holds a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under world renowned Master Renzo Gracie and Professor John Danaher.  During his seventeen years at the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City, he has trained with and studied under some of the highest authorities in the sport, members of the Gracie family, and several mixed martial arts fighters and champions.

Professor Pelinkovic is also a Black Belt in Shotokan Karate under renowned instructor Shihan Kai Leung.  Since earning his Black Belt, Professor Pelinkovic has continued his training with Sensei Adel Elbehiry.  A 3rd degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, Professor Pelinkovic is a 3-time USA National Team Member, a 4-time national champion, and a multiple-time state and regional champion.

A fixture at the Renzo Gracie Academy for almost 20 years, Professor Mike Jaramillo is a 3rd degree Black Belt under the world renowned Professor John Danaher and Master Renzo Gracie.

Self-Defense for Anyone

Royce Gracie won UFC1, a no rules fight tournament where he was the smallest and least athletic competitor, and won easily.

If he could use Jiu Jitsu to not only defend himself but submit his opponents, skilled fighters at the height of their discipline, it can work for anyone.

BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) is an activity for anyone because much of your experience is dependent on your personality and body type. You control the intensity of your training.

Jiu Jitsu is for Everyone

Success in BJJ doesn't depend on your size, athleticism, strength or speed.  These attributes can help but are no substitute for proper technique.  In BJJ, good technique regularly nullifies physical advantages.

BJJ is also specific to your build.  Some techniques are easier or harder dependent on your body type. Part of the fun in Jiu Jitsu is finding which the moves work best for you.

Community Like No Other

The BJJ has created the most racially, culturally and socioeconomically diverse communities in the world. Training BJJ inevitably leads to meeting people from various walks of life.

Physical Gains

For an individual, the greatest gift they gain from Jiu Jitsu is the ability to solve problems under stress.
— John Danaher, Reknown Renzo Gracie Blackbelt

Weight loss without the Hyper Focus on the Pounds

Weight loss is almost universal in BJJ, especially in the beginning stages.  Most people get so caught up in the mental part of BJJ that they don't fully notice their body transforming.
